Ports of Auckland Strike(s) - Container Detention
We are appreciative of the issues importers and exporters face over this time.
Detention is the charge that shipping lines apply for holding on to their container beyond an agreed time – these times vary from shipping line to shipping line and for imports, exports reefers et. We can only refer exporters and importers to the relevant shipping companies.
Demurrage is what the port charges for containers that dwell beyond specific times on the wharf. Our arrangements on this were included in the Q7A sheet that came out yesterday – yes, it was a long document! – so repeated below:
Q: Will I have to pay demurrage if my container has to sit on the wharf during the closure?
A: No, demurrage will not apply for the periods that the Terminal is closed.
Friday December 2nd to Tuesday December 6th will be demurrage-free days. Other demurrage issues will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis by the Customer Services Team.
Q: Will export demurrage apply if my container has to be delivered early because of the closure times?
A: It is unlikely that containers will be on the wharf for longer than the normal seven free days.
Exceptions will be dealt with by the Customer Services Team on a case-by-case basis.
Q: Will I have to pay the hazardous storage charge if the container is on the wharf for longer than 72 hours?
A: No, the storage free period will align with the Demurrage free period, Friday December 2nd to Tuesday December 6th.
