A recent article in The Loadstar, Forwarders must innovate or die, as shippers lose sight of value caught our attention. The article, talking about the UK freight industry, looks at how smaller freight companies are affected by the increased expansion of large companies, and their monopoly over corporate business. We talked to CBAFF Council member, Tony Lynch, to get his perspective on Loadstar’s article.
Loadstar: Medium-sized and small forwarders are having to rethink their business strategy as they can no longer compete on price alone in a continuously fierce market. As the largest multinational 3PLs go for broke over each customer deal, other companies are left by the wayside in a tendering process that focuses ever more closely on cost.
TL: I am not sure there is any great revelation [here]; the only certainty in the world is change and forwarders like any businesses need to evolve to find niche opportunities and adapt to the changing world. Sounds Music stores is an example of a business model that did not change, they are now no longer around.
Please be aware that the traditional CBAFF PIN Courses are changing. The implementation of JBMS has provided an opportunity for NZ Customs, MPI and Industry to review the course content of the PIN Course which has been renamed to "CBAFF UUI Course".
The new course now includes additional content such as JBMS, Biosecurity, Refunds, Personal Effects, Express and Transshipments.This has meant an increase to the course duration of an extra two days. Other changes provide learners with an opportunity to practice "on job" practical entries between courses and rather than sitting three separate exams, learners will now complete a final exam at the end of the course.
Whilst new learners will no longer be accepted into the PIN Courses, learners who are already part way through completing their PIN Course will have up until the 30th November to complete their exams - please contact us immediately so that we can facilitate the completing of your learning. From the 1st of December the old PIN exams will no longer be available.

The following information is from NZ Customs and concerns new duty rates for alcohol and motor spirits, starting 01 July 2013.
New excise duty rates for alcohol from 1 July 2013
The annual adjustment to the excise and excise-equivalent duty rates on alcoholic beverages will take place on 1 July 2013.
The annual adjustment is based on movements in the “Consumers Price Index All groups, excluding credit services” over the 12-month period to 31 March 2013.

Between 5pm on Friday 10 May and 9am Monday 13 May, client and supplier code applications will not be processed, including applications submitted by fax or email.
This outage will enable changes to be made to the Joint Border Management System (JBMS) in preparation for industry access to Trade Single Window.
Processing is expected to recommence shortly after 9am on Monday 13 May. It is not expected that processing times from Monday will be affected by the outage.

JBMS is being developed by Customs and the Ministry for Primary Industries. The Trade Single Window (TSW) is a major component of JBMS, and includes implementation of new WCO3 messages that will ultimately replace current import and export entries, cargo reports and craft reports.
