I’ve been in the freight industry since 2005, straight out of high school and straight into the unknown. Like many teenagers, I had no idea what I wanted to do. University didn’t feel like the right fit just for the sake of ticking a box, so I started looking for a full-time office job. I landed an entry-level role in import operations… and never looked back. I quickly discovered that this industry isn’t just about moving goods, it’s fast-paced, challenging, people-focused, and constantly evolving. That first job set the course for what’s become an incredibly rewarding career, a stint in Australia before returning home to New Zealand.
Today, I’m the International Manager for Pengelly’s Christchurch office, leading a fantastic team in international freight operations. No two days are the same and I have a lot of variety in my role, team leadership, sales, procurement, key account management, and global agent relationships with some international travel.
A huge part of my journey has been thanks to the managers and mentors who took the time to teach me, guide me, and open doors. The best leaders lead by lifting others up, and I’ve been lucky to work with some of the best.
Over the years, the industry has changed in some major ways. The shift to electronic and paperless processes has been a game-changer, and then there was COVID, which forced us all to adapt, rethink, and become more resilient.
Through it all, one thing hasn’t changed, the people. The freight and logistics world is full of smart, driven, down-to-earth people, and I love that I get to work alongside them every day. One of the best parts of this industry is how global it is. I get to collaborate with people from all around the world, learn about different cultures, and build real connections. I thrive on challenges and enjoy the chance to grow along the way, I’ve made some amazing friends.
Joining the CBAFF Council wasn’t something I expected, I wouldn’t have nominated myself, but I’m genuinely grateful someone else did. My time on Council has been incredibly rewarding. It’s given me a broader perspective on the industry and a deeper appreciation for the people and businesses that keep things moving behind the scenes. Being part of shaping the future of freight and giving back to the community that’s shaped me has been a real highlight.
Being named the CBAFF Young Achiever in 2007 was a great experience and now I am happy to encourage others to have a go at the competition.
If I could give one piece of advice to anyone thinking about joining this industry it would be to have a go, say yes to opportunities, ask questions, push outside your comfort zone as you never know where it might take you.
Looking ahead, the best thing we can do for the future of freight is look after our people. A happy, well-supported team becomes your best recruitment tool. If we keep up with global trends and keep building strong cultures, the industry’s future looks bright.
