I started my career in the freight and customs industry back in 1981, working for a privately owned brokerage called Pains Customs Agency. My first role was as a Customs runner - I spent my days taking entries to the long room for stamping, dropping off original bills of lading to shipping lines, and collecting parcels from the post. It was fast-paced and hands-on, but it gave me a solid understanding of how the industry really worked.

Today, I’m the National Customs Manager at GVI Logistics Ltd, overseeing all customs and clearance responsibilities across our offices nationwide. It’s a role that brings together everything I’ve learned over the years - from technical knowledge and regulatory compliance to managing people and processes.

I’ve been lucky to learn from some incredibly experienced people along the way. That grounding, built through practical experience, has made a huge difference in how I approach challenges and support others.

Over the years, I’ve seen the industry change in big ways - especially with the deregulation of broking and the introduction of new technology. Some of it’s been great and helped us work smarter. Other changes have added new layers of complexity. Either way, staying adaptable has been key.

What I enjoy most is the variety. Every day brings something different - whether it's solving a tricky clearance issue, helping a client, or mentoring someone new to the team. I’ve also made connections across the industry and with government agencies that have lasted throughout my career, which is something I really value.

These days, one of the most rewarding parts of my role is helping others grow. Supporting our people to understand how the industry works and showing them the career potential in it, is something I’m genuinely passionate about.

If I were to give advice to someone starting out, I’d say: be curious, ask questions, and take every opportunity that comes your way. You learn so much by just getting involved.

Looking ahead, I believe we need to do a better job of raising the profile of our industry - especially for younger people who might not know what we do or how rewarding this career can be. Sharing our stories and experiences is part of that.
As a former council member, I also wanted to contribute to the wider direction of the industry. For me, it’s about giving back - sharing what I’ve learned, supporting the next generation, and helping to shape a strong future for the sector.
